Fashion Wars: Lindsay Anne Jones
How did your dream of being a designer begin?
My dream of becoming a fashion designer consciously began when I was fifteen. I majored in Fine Arts in High School. In my junior year, every art student was required to choose an elective, and I choose Fashion Illustration and Design. I really loved designing clothing and was always inspired by everything. I knew that this was something that I could happily do every day of my life. I decided then that I wanted to pursue apparel design as a career and began to research my options. In order to audition to apply for the Fashion Institute of Technology, I needed to learn to sew. I enrolled in a small sewing class in Brooklyn for a year, which enabled me to construct garments for my F.I.T audition. I was accepted into F.I.T and continued my education there.
Subconsciously, I’ve always wanted to be a fashion designer without realizing it. As a child, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I would always say that I wanted to teach the second grade. However, when I was at home playing dolls with my sisters, I always pretended that I owned my own fashion empire. That is my dream today. To design and own a line of apparel for women, men, and children, that is enhanced by a line of accessories and cosmetics.
What was the biggest hurdle/ if any you had to over come?
My clothing line Lin-Z incorporated is still in its pre-start up state. I am constantly searching for a catapult to hurl my company into becoming a start-up company. Without generating revenue, this is not much more than a hobby. Battling the constant decline of the economy is a challenge for the entire garment industry right now.
What have you learned from you success?
What I am learning as I am progressing in this industry is to not take the idea of success too seriously, because then I would have to take the idea of failure seriously. If I dwell on my failures for too long, it will be difficult to pick myself up, dust myself off, and start all over again. People are fickle, and have short attention spans. They may love you one day, hate you another day, and forget about you all together after that. The most important thing to do is to stay focused and not to quit. I try to surround myself with people who believe in me and stay away from the rest.
What is your favorite project you have ever worked on?
Every new collection I work on becomes my favorite project. My Fall/Winter 2011 collection was my largest and most complete. I felt
that the collection contained an outfit for every occasion. I am currently working on my Spring 2012 collection, therefore, this is what I am the most excited about right now. My first runway show was during fashion week in Boston in 2009, where my spring 2010 collection was very well received. I was elated! I was also very excited to take part in Shake the Runway last year. This was a charity runway show benefitting the relief efforts raising money for the earthquake victims in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
What do you love about fashion?
What I love about fashion is the endless possibilities it presents. It’s a cycle, therefore it never ends. It’s ongoing, it reinvents itself, and it occasionally sprouts something new. I love to create looks. Fashion is art that you live your life in. It is completely personal. You can tell a lot about a person by what they choose to clothe themselves in. It is the choosing that makes fashion interesting. Every person chooses how to dress themselves as individuals for a variety of reasons. Whether the reason is to stand out, to fit in, for utility purposes, for religion…etc. Every outfit created has a story.
What are your biggest accomplishments?
Right now, I feel my biggest accomplishment is that I haven’t given up. The industry is in turmoil right now. When people make cut-backs in their lives, luxuries are the first to go. America is short on cash at the moment and this is hurting the apparel industry. I will keep moving forward and hope that things will get better soon.
How can you inspire others to go for it and live their dream?
When I meet new people and I tell them that I am pursuing a dream, I think that a lot of them re-examine their lives and begin to seriously think about what they really want to do with it. Life is fleeting and I don’t intend to waste it slaving away at something that doesn’t matter to me. I think it’s sad when people give up their dreams, because if they never gave up, they may have reached it eventually. I hope that I will never become discouraged and abandon my dream.
